Samen met studentenorkest Valerius en het Haags Toonkunstkoor laten we op 21 juni midzomer muzikaal tot leven komen in een heerlijk concert vol schitterende en afwisselende muziek.
We starten de dag in de vroege ochtenduren als de zon al een beetje door de gordijnen heen prikt, maar je je nog even wilt omdraaien, met het verstilde Sleep van Eric Whitacre. De nieuwe dag lonkt, de langste van het jaar… Dus hup, uit de veren.
Het eerste deel van de 8e symfonie van Antonín Dvorák brengt ons naar de zonnige duinen, waar de vroege vogels een concert geven. Er is haast geen mooiere opmaat te bedenken voor de idyllische, veelkleurige Serenade to Music van Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Dvořák neemt ons met het tweede deel van zijn symfonie eerst dieper het bos in en daarna de duintoppen op. Daar kijken we uit over de zee en luisteren we met open mond naar de nieuwe compositie Balea van Nahia Vicente Elordi. Een prachtig werk over vissers, de golf van Biskaje en een mysterieuze walvis (Balea).
Het wordt warmer en ook de sfeer stijgt naar vrolijke hoogte. Op een zonnige plek in de duinen maken we een walsje op deel 3 van symfonie 8 van Dvořák. En horen we het goed? In deel 4 komt er zelfs een fanfare voorbij: het feest is compleet!
Moe van alle indrukken dromen we aan het eind van de middag weg bij George Gershwin’s Summertime en Someone to Watch Over You. En dan mogen nog één keer de voetjes van de vloer: aan het einde van deze mooie zomerdag dansen we samen op de klassieker I Got Rhythm. Wat een prachtige dag!

On 21 June, together with the Valerius Student Orchestra and the Haags Toonkunstkoor we will bring midsummer to life in a delightful concert brimming with beautiful music – from well-known classics to unexpected gems.
Midsummer’s day starts in the early morning hours, with Eric Whitacre’s ‘Sleep’. While the sun peeks through the curtains and our bed is so very comfortable, the new day beckons – the longest day of the year… Time to get up!
The first movement of Antonín Dvořák’s 8th Symphony takes us to the sunny dunes, where the birds are giving their morning concert. It is hard to imagine a more beautiful prelude to Ralph Vaughan Williams’ idyllic Serenade to Music.
With the second movement of his symphony, Dvořák first takes us into the woods behind the sea and then up onto the dune tops. Once there, we look out over the sea and listen, spellbound, to the new composition Balea by Nahia Vicente Elordi. A beautiful work about fishermen, the Bay of Biscay and a mysterious whale (Balea).
The temperature increases, and so does the merriment. In a sunny spot in the dunes, we waltz to the third movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, and during the fourth movement, we can even hear a marching band go by – it’s time to celebrate summer to the fullest!
Tired from all the excitement, at the end of the afternoon we drift off to George Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ and ‘Someone to Watch Over You’. And then it’s time to hit the dance floor one last time. At the end of this beautiful summer’s day, we dance together to the classic ‘I Got Rhythm’. What a wonderful day!
